Household wormeries

This is a pair of wormeries that caters very well for one household that produces quite a lot of veg waste. They are rat proof, as that was found necessary !

As one fills, another is started. When the first is full, you transfer un-rotted material plus worms from the top of this to the newer one, and then harvest the worm casts from the full one.

It is very good having two, as stuff can be moved from one to the other. Sometimes one does not thrive, and having another as back-up is invaluable.

The metal container on the left is a re-used 'flatley' which was a type of electrically heated clothes dryer from the 1950's. It had a metal element to heat and dry clothes, and ventilation slots at the top which are ideal for allowing good aeration of the compost. It has lasted well, not rusting much yet. It has been in use as a wormery for 8 years ! In the bottom are two layers of bricks to form a rat barrier and allow good drainage.

The wooden container is made of wooden scraps cladding a small workbench. It has a metal bottom and chicken wire to keep rats out.

Note the sturdy wooden lids, with brick on, to keep animals, including badgers, out.
